I don't know if this happens to any of you, but for me it seems like I need my music in a different format every now and then. For example, I was making some slide shows for my family with all the digital photos I took over the year. Everything was moving along at a steady clip until it came time to put some music in. The program I was using would only use certain formats, and the music I have stored on my PC is in a couple of different formats. Some of the music would work fine (mp3's) but wav and OGG would not work. This slowed me down tremendously, and I had to choose between finding another song or finding the CD and re-ripping it into a compatible format in order to use the file in the slideshow program.
If I had CDex at the time I could have completed the process a lot quicker by simply converting the files I wanted into a compatible format. CDex is an encoder, which basically means it can change music format types and convert from one format to another. The program will work with Winamp (a free player), as a plug-in, so if any of you don't like Windows MP10 (or whatever player you use) or want to try a free player, go check it out.
Cdex has a forum you can use to answer difficult questions or if you've got your act together you can answer other people's questions. The company also keeps asking for user input and ideas that can be utilized to make their product better, I love that, things like plug-ins and possible improvements.
There are some system requirements you may want to pay attention to:
* Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP
* Adaptec's ASPI manager
* CD-ROM which is capable of extracting digital audio (IDE-ATAPI or SCSI drive)
* 16 MB RAM (minimum tested)
* Enough disk space to meet the needs of your project
