Codec stands for either Coder-Decoder or Compressor-Decompressor, depending on who you ask. There are audio, text, and video codecs. They're used to coordinate the audio track, any text for subtitles, and the video tracks in videoconferencing and streaming media. Some downloaded video clips will require a specific codec before you can play the content.
