For what ever reason, when Microsoft made changes to Internet Explorer 7 interface, they decided to make drastic changes such as not displaying the menus…of all things….how am I suppose to find my bookmarks? Once I figured out how to display the menus (look for the Tools link - way, way, out of the way on the right and select Menu Bar) something still did not look right. Ahhh, yes, the address bar, what is it doing above the toolbars?
Well it's time to move it back to where it belongs, below the toolbars. But Microsoft does not give us the option to customize the location of the address bar anywhere in the Tools or View menus. Fortunately there is way to move it with this easy registry addition. Follow the steps below exactly as instructed and give Internet Explorer 7 its familiar look back.
Note: To enable the run command in the Start menu on Vista, right-click on the Start Button, select Properties, then click Customize. Select the check box for Run command.
Close Internet Explorer.
1. Click on Start / Run… and type regedit in the run box (If Vista prompts you for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue).
Before Proceeding - the next step includes exporting the registry key to use as a backup if needed. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. As a safe guard, you may want to create a System Restore point when making configuration changes to your System.
2. Navigate to the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser. Right click on WebBrowser and select Export to back up the Key to a location on your Computer (you may want to also copy to a CD or USB drive that can be accessed if needed).
Note If the WebBrowser key does not exist, create it by following these steps:
a. Right-click Toolbar, then select New / Key.
b. In the New Key #1 box, type WebBrowser, and then press ENTER.
3. Right-click WebBrowser, select New, and then click DWORD Value. On Vista select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. In the New Value #1 box, type ITBar7Position, and then press ENTER.
5. Double click on ITBar7Position, and in the Value data: box, type 1, then click OK.
6. Exit Registry Editor, and then start Internet Explorer 7.
You should now see the address bar back where it belongs!
